Inside our anchovy sourcing partnership in the Bay of Biscay
Most fish oil supplements on the market are blends. Multiple species, multiple ocean regions, batched together in a way that makes traceability impossible. We chose to build the opposite supply chain.
Our Deep Marine Omega EPA/DHA is sourced exclusively from anchovies harvested in the Bay of Biscay, off the northern coast of Spain. The fishery is regulated by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, and audited annually by an independent third party.
Why anchovies, why Biscay? Three reasons. First, anchovies are short-lived and low on the food chain, which means heavy metal bioaccumulation is dramatically lower than long-lived species like tuna. Second, the Bay of Biscay's cold-water environment supports higher natural concentrations of EPA and DHA in the fish themselves — less concentration is required in processing. Third, the regional fishery has operated within scientifically determined catch limits for over two decades.
Every batch arrives at our facility with full chain-of-custody documentation, a certificate of analysis covering heavy metals, oxidation markers, and EPA/DHA potency, and a sustainability audit reference number. Members can request these documents at any time.
This is what "sourcing direct" actually means. It is slower, more expensive, and far less scalable than the industry default. We think that's the point.
